Philadelphia Federal Credit Union employees again took to the soil to plant vegetables and herbs this spring in the PFCU Garden. Aside from keeping up with the annual tradition and enjoying the team-building activities, PFCU won a prize in the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s City Gardens Contest for the second year in a row. This year, PFCU was honored with second prize in the “Community Garden” category.

Employees staked out parcels of land for each department to plant its garden at PFCU’s Operations Center (12800 Townsend Road).  After careful preparation and tilling of the parcels, employees tended to their plants over the next two months. Once picked, employees had the opportunity to make monetary donations in exchange for the crops. All collected donations were given to Aid For Friends Frail Elderly Outreach Center.

Aid For Friends serves needy, isolated shut-ins, primarily the frail elderly, in the Greater Philadelphia area, with free daily home-cooked meals delivered weekly by empathetic volunteer visitors, and also to provide shut-ins with free outreach services. For more information on Aid For Friends, call (215) 464-2224 or visit www.aidforfriends.org.

PFCU was invited to attend an Awards Ceremony that will be held on September 11, 2010 in conjunction with the Horticultural Society Fall Garden Festival at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Here, winners will be recognized for their efforts to enhance the city’s green initiative.
