Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU), Long Island’s largest full-service, not-for-profit financial institutions, held a Shredding Day at its Farmingville Branch. The free e-waste recycling/destruction and paper shredding day brought community and TFCU members out in droves. Families and individuals appreciated the opportunity to get rid of tons of accumulated paper documents and electronic waste (e-waste) for secure destruction and recycling. Some watched the paper shredding, which was done on site in two Cintas Document Management mobile shredding trucks. The electronic materials, including obsolete computers, old hard drives, monitors, printers, cell phones, scanners and radios were placed in containers for off-site secure destruction and recycling by e-Scrap Destruction. Total amounts of 19,450 pounds of paper and 9,672 pounds of e-waste were collected.
“The Shredding Day held at TFCU’s Farmingville Branch was our seventh, and in terms of the amount of material collected, it was our most successful event. Hundreds of members and local residents brought their documents and financial records and outdated and obsolete electronic equipment to be destroyed in an environmentally safe and secure manner. TFCU developed this consumer education program to help reduce the occurrence of identity theft and fraud. Shredding Day is an example of both an environmental and consumer awareness program that reflects our commitment to our members and all Long Islanders,” said Robert G. Allen, TFCU President/CEO.
Shredding personal documents and properly destroying computer hard drives and electronics reduces the possibility of identity theft and the potential for fraud. e-Scrap Destruction collected these items at the site and was responsible for the complete and secure destruction of the materials at its modern Islandia facility. Hazardous materials used in the
manufacturing of electronic equipment or as a coating for components will never end up in a landfill.
TFCU has sponsored seven Shredding Days, collecting totals of 53,650 pounds of paper and 37,498 pounds of electronics. More than 1,509 members and local residents have participated in TFCU shredding days.
