Our mission for the National Association of Credit Union Service Organizations (NACUSO) is "to be the catalyst for instituting collaboration, innovation, and the reinvention of the Credit Union industry. NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE HISTORY OR BE HISTORY! The credit union industry is in the mature phase of its lifecycle and experiencing some of the most significant challenges of any time in its history. When you consider the aggregate impact of the economic malaise, bailout of the corporate credit union system, industry consolidation, and minimal market differentiation, the most pressing challenge facing credit unions today is sustainability. But sustainability is not a problem to be solved; it is a future to be created. The most feasible solution to credit union sustainability is collaboration and getting credit unions to work together in business networks to leverage shared resources, create scalable platforms, and drive greater value back to credit union members. Embracing and achieving a meaningful and transformational level of sustainability calls for new ways of thinking. To demonstrate the of the value of collaboration consider the comparison the 5-year average annual performance of credit unions having an investment in a multi-owned CUSO with those having no investment in a multi-owned CUSO: CU’s w/ Multi-owned CUSO CU’s w/No Multi-owned CUSO Asset Growth 7.04% 4.50% Loan Growth 9.51% 6.35% Member Growth 2.82% 0.82% Source: Callahan Peer To Peer Software When the going gets tough, the tough collaborate. Economic downturns provide an opportunity to create a gap between credit unions and their competitors. While others cower, credit unions must take advantage of their ability to think critically, collaborate, and innovate together. Collaboration is a learned skill and must, along with implementation, become the new currency of our industry. Now is the time to make history. You alone can do it, but you can’t do it alone. Collaboration is an essential element to credit union industry sustainability. Visit www.nacuso.org for additional details on Joining NACUSO, Membership Benefits and NACUSO Events.
