Position Description West Community Credit Union is seeking a strategically oriented, ethical, professional, hands-on and results-driven Vice President of Lending. The Vice President of Lending supervises approximately 10 employees in 2 locations (O’Fallon, Brentwood). This is a key leadership position on the credit union senior leadership team that participates in establishing and implementing major company goals and objectives. The Vice President of Lending is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the Credit Union's consumer & business loan, mortgage and collections functions. This position is charged with ensuring that lending operations are in accordance with established policies, procedures, and legal requirements and ensuring that lending activities meet key performance measures related to production, accuracy and credit quality. The Vice President of Lending analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of lending processes and supervises and appraises the activities of subordinate managers and ensures that execution of lending activities support the Mission, Vision and Values of the Credit Union.
Key Accountabilities
Responsible for the strategic management of the consumer loan program and mortgage program, including underwriting, collections and risk management.
- Assists Senior Leadership with long and short-term Credit Union planning.
- Participates in managing and adapting lending policies and procedures to ensure that they complement organizational goals, while maintaining legal and regulatory compliance.
- Executes strategic action plans to achieve strategic objectives and goals established during planning.
- Maintains quality service by establishing and enforcing the Vision of the credit union.
Ensures the effective performance of lending related services.
- Ensures that lending activities are conducted in accordance with established policy guidelines and standards, and are properly documented.
- Conducts periodic reviews of existing policies to ensure effectiveness. Ensures that policies are updated and are in accordance with evolving regulations, legal requirements, and industry trends.
- Ensures the maintenance of statistics relative to loans issued, report data, delinquency follow-up, etc.
- Ensures that insurance functions support member needs and are well coordinated with lending operations.
- Develops annual staff incentive plans, communicates values, enforces new strategic initiatives and assigns accountability.
Assumes responsibility for the effective administration and execution of lending functions.
- Manages and oversees expenses and pursues cost-saving measures, including preparation of annual budget, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances and initiation of applicable corrective actions.
- Keeps Senior Leadership informed of loan activities, progress toward established objectives, and of any significant problems.
- Completes required reports and related documents promptly and accurately, and in compliance with Credit Union guidelines and policies. Ensures the maintenance of department records.
- Attends monthly Board meetings and provides reports as required. Attends other meetings as required.
- Attends the Quarterly ALCO meeting and contributes information on loan pricing strategy in coordination with the CFO.
- Monitors market data on loan pricing and makes recommendations with respect to pricing.
- Evaluates the quality and associated risk of various loan portfolios for the credit union.
- Assesses collection accounts recovered in relation to effort, methods, and costs involved. Recommends workout proposals on appropriate accounts.
- Keeps the Credit Committee and Senior Leadership informed by designing, generating and presenting monthly, quarterly and annual loan reports. Coordinates the Credit Committee’s review of all employee and family member loans and other loan related issues.
- Ensures the availability of adequate services and materials to support lending activities.
- When necessary, participate in various department functional tasks including but not limited to such as underwriting member and employee loans, making collection calls, and working modifications.
Effectively supervises personnel, ensuring optimal performance.
- Provides leadership to assigned personnel through effective objective setting, delegation, and communication. Conducts staff meetings as required. Assigns, directs, and coordinates work.
- Ensures that personnel are well trained, effective, and optimally used. Instructs personnel regarding policy, procedure, and program changes and ensures that they are well informed regarding related legal and regulatory developments.
- Conducts performance development plans (performance appraisals) as required. Formulates and implements corrective actions as needed.
- Ensures that staffing levels are appropriate and human resources are effectively utilized. Conducts interviews and assists with hiring as needed.
Assumes responsibility for ensuring that professional business relationships are established and maintained with members, vendors, the business community, and trade organizations.
- Ensures that members are properly informed of Credit Union loan policies and procedures.
- Ensures that requests, problems, and questions are promptly resolved.
- Ensures that the Credit Union's professional reputation is maintained throughout lending and business transactions with members.
- Manages relationship with vendors and third-party relationships related to lending functions (including the CULS Indirect Loan Program) to ensure risks are managed, costs are minimized and performance is maximized.
Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.
- Ensures that work area is clean, secure, and well maintained.
- Stays informed regarding developments and changes in lending services.
- Cross-sells Credit Union services.
Qualifications The fully qualified candidate will possess an established track record of successful leadership-level lending management experience. Five to ten years of progressive lending management experience in a Credit Union or similar financial institution and a Bachelor’s degree in finance/related field is required. Candidates with previous executive level experience as a contributing member of management/leadership team and/or a MBA or Master’s degree in finance/related field are preferred.
This position requires solid understanding of government and legal regulations/requirements consumer & mortgage, lending, underwriting, collections, insurance, and related functions. Small business lending, while not required, would be an asset. The ideal candidate will have proven ability to operate as a strategic thinker, be innovative and have a high sensitivity to employee and member centricity. This position requires one who will lead and operate at a strategic level and, when necessary, be hands-on with the consumer loan, mortgage and collections functions. The preferred candidate will have the ability to identify key metrics and effectively relay information to different stakeholders by utilizing a variety of methods of reporting and presentation.
This is a highly visible position requiring the ability to develop and maintain good relations with employees and senior leadership. Developing relationships and becoming a trusted resource in all branches of the credit union will be a priority.
