CUNA Mutual Group President/CEO Talks CU Challenges/Opportunities During Free Event, Including Q&A

MADISON, Wis. -- CUNA Mutual Group President and CEO Jeff Post will present a Discovery Webinar “Special Feature” on risks and opportunities facing credit unions, followed by a live question-and-answer session on Feb. 29.

“Navigating Today’s Risks to Capitalize on Today’s Opportunities,” recorded at a recent presentation Post made to a Louisiana Credit Union League Roundtable, will be presented as part of the Discovery Webinar series beginning at 12:15 p.m. CST. The 75-minute event is free, and credit unions can register at www.cunamutual.com/discoverywebinars.

Post will spell out the many challenges facing credit unions, including global economic duress, regulatory issues and new competition. He will also tell credit unions that business as usual is no longer an option and that there are opportunities for organizations with strong leadership.

“Credit unions can differentiate themselves and take advantage of the anger many consumers are feeling over big banks, but it will require clear strategies and sound expense management. Credit unions cannot let themselves become paralyzed by the risks they face,” Post said.

Chris,You are kind to respond to people to are seeking a platform, not really asking questions or commenting on what you are posting. With your passion and desire to improve education, a connection with the Gates Foundation seems more in line than a connection with commenters who desire to bait you more than to understand your perspective.I left teaching to have my children. And because my original education and license didn’t c ome from the State of Washington (where I now reside), to continue to teach I must complete 15 credits in a master’s program (I have a master’s degree) to maintain my Washington license. The state will not permit me to do this while I am not teaching (seems like I could devote more time to the classes and learning while off with my kids and not teaching). They will reinstate two years of my license that I did not use if I am hired and then I can start those classes. The legislation that is connected to education in all states is important and in some cases prohibitive. My youngest doesn’t start school for another two years, so I have time to make my decisions, but truly, I don’t know if I will teach again. The State makes it difficult, the students need so much, the parents either don’t participate or struggle to be supportive. Yet, at my core, I value education. I know the power each student discovers as he/she writes a clear thought or reads an idea that prompts their world to shift.I am still in touch with some of my first students who are grown and have families of their own now. One of my last students is my dog, house and child sitter. I’m overwhelmed when I think about the seniors asking me to speak at their graduation. Teaching is hard and rewarding in ways no other job is (I didn’t arrive at teaching directly, just as you, Chris, did not.). I can edit the life out of an HR manual, and get a lovely thank you e-mail from the person who requested the help, but the experience is not the same as introducing students to new ways to view what they read and the world. It is not as rewarding as connecting them to words that become a part of them. Teaching is hard–so many opportunities to fail daily. People in the private sector have report to their manager and the owner–maybe. Teachers have too many bosses–the board, their principal, their department heads, and the parents of every child in their classrooms. . . never mind a teacher’s own standards and expectations.Chris, I don’t want you to head for the hills. I hope you will be able to continue to serve the students in your area. I know you are engaging, intelligent and creative. I know you are compassionate wtih your students. That is who you are and is what students deserve.

that I agree that the health care package is out of line and wasteful. Personally, I don’t see it as a benefit, but only a waste. But how dare you say I make too much money. Read my about page. I worked my ass off at two jobs to make ends meet for a long time after leaving a much higher paying private sector job. I went deeply into debt when I switched careers, and have often questioned my decision as it has caused much strain and stress for my family. And now on top of that, you (and 1/2 of America) say I make too much. I am required to pay to be a teacher to get my certification. I am required to continue my professional development at my own great expense–or I lose that certification. Thanks to NCLB, I am required to jump through more and more scrutinizing hoops to keep my job. And I must firmly disagree with you that no one thinks we should be paid minimum wage. Ask the angry conservatives how much they think teachers should be paid. Take a poll. Those are the same people that get elected to school boards–promising their constituents to save their taxes. It blows my mind that you actually believe that, when these people control my wage, how that will be good for me.Actually–it probably would be good for me as it would push me out of here and back into the private sector. Hell I’m ready to go now. I also question the measure used to compare private vs public schools. They are not the same. No Child Left Behind does not apply to private schools. The accountability and scrutiny is nowhere near the same. The data used to compare is flawed–if such data does indeed exist. Here’s the deal. Smart people don’t want to live as I have the last 10 years. Working two jobs to make ends meet. Thus, smart people won’t do this. If this keeps up, I won’t much longer. It’s not worth it. And the private sector will be flooded with smart people–competing for their jobs. Open market. I agree w/ you that people don’t need a ton of cash to excel at what they do. I love the research on motivation outlined in books like Dan Pink’s Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us. But you have to pay them enough to take care of their basic needs. I’ve been doing this for 10 years now and — it hasn’t been easy. Basic needs are met because we do garage sales, and are grateful when friends and neighbors donate their used clothes. 10 years of this, And now millions are bitching because I’m making too much money. And telling me how to live.I’m sorry but that pisses me off.And I’m sorry for losing my cool here in this comment. But I’m tired. I’m tired of being attacked. Scrutinized. I’m tired of getting dirty looks from people who suddenly get to judge my worth–and weigh my value to society against whatever measure, study, or metric that they find convenient. Ben, I truly do appreciate your comments. Show me how on God’s green earth that trusting the Toms, Dicks, and Harrys that get elected to the school board is good for teaching and learning and maybe I’ll start to listen.

You replace the items whenever you want to – keep receipts and boxes. But theft claims usually take a minimum of 4 – 6 weeks to settle. The police usually take 2 – 4 weeks, just getting the official copy of the theft report to the insurance company. You’ll be asked for an inventory of what was stolen, but nothing happens until that police report is received by the insurance company, and there’s nothing you can do to speed that up.

My hope is to share the American Dream now that we are well into the 21st century. Not only with everyday American citizens but rather every man, women and child that occupies planet earth. In our short yet explosive time hear on the planet man has evolved many times over thruoghout the centuries.Since the great Ceasar to the magnificent Lincoln from the grate industrial revolution to the race of outter space the one common denominator each preceding generaion delt with was change and absolute change because the people demanded it. Today I believe the biggest change ever needed for man, confronts us today. I remember like it was yesterday when I was a young boy and I would be in school and open my school book and we would learn about new technolegy for the future, they talked about great computers and all kinds of robots and yes even about amazing space travel. When the school day was done I would return home where mom would be preparing dinner and dad was due home shortly from a hard but yet fare and honests days work. Well my friend those text books were only partly right, you see no one and I mean no one had any idea of the extent of the technology boom that would consume the planet from the late 80′s to present day and far out succeded any school books expectations. And with no end in sight for the technology age the sky if indeed the universe is the limit. In 1776 the greatest document ever concieved by man was signed and implented by dozens or even hundreds of great men indeed, it truely revolutionised man kind. The greatness of are for fathers need not be debated on this subject for surley the greatness and the power that exzemplifies u.s throughout the world is attributed directly to them. But even with all there great thinker’s and there endless debates to achieve this historic document they knew there was no way to know what the future held for the great men and women in the u.s yet to come. So with all there great wisdom (even though many were slave owners) they made sure there was one invariable right they set foth for all ….Amendment’s..CHANGE, you see even our great great great grandfathers new then that there document would not be perfect forever. Today as we reach 7 billion people on the planet the number one phrase through out the industrial world is streamline. Words like population growth and steamline don’t mix infact I believe it makes for a very deadly cocktail. So until we convience the tradionalist which makes up about 98% of the population, I do not believe man kind today can make the necessary and absolute changes that need to be made!!! The subject no longer is the left correct or is the right correct, indeed the correct question is are we ready and able for absolute change. The measure of success now has to be based upon this one simple question how is my neighbor doing….NAMASTE my brother.
