Day One of Inaugural Credit Union Cyber Security Symposium concludes

NOVEMBER 13, 2014 (Arlington, VA) —  Nearly 100 individuals, including about 50 representing credit unions in 27 states, took part in day one of the inaugural Credit Union Cyber Security Symposium at the Hyatt Arlington in Arlington, Va.

The event, which is being hosted by NASCUS in partnership with Credit Union National Association, and emceed by IT security firm TrustCC, also drew numerous individuals from state and federal regulatory agencies, trades and private sector security response firms, and members of the press.

The day’s speakers were Tom Schauer, CEO of IT security firm TrustCC; Ian Harper, former CIO of Pentagon Federal Credit Union; Julia Philipp, deputy director for cyber intelligence in the Office of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Compliance Policy, Department of the Treasury; Randy Gainer, partner, BakerHostetler; Holly Chase, regional field manager for the Division of Banks, state of Massachusetts; and Paul Reymann, partner, McGovern Risk Advisors. They spoke on issues ranging from the legal ramifications of security breaches to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) framework.

Tomorrow’s speakers include Schauer, NCUA’s Tim Segerson, LT Public Relations’ Casey Boggs, the state of Michigan’s John Kolhoff, and CUNA Mutual’s Jay Isaacson.

“The nation and the world are faced with cyber-threats daily and dealing with them is challenging,” said NASCUS President and CEO Lucy Ito. “NASCUS aims to help by raising the awareness of cyber security throughout the credit union system, and the Credit Union Cyber Security Symposium is an important way we are helping to bring attention to this important issue, which is increasingly the focus of regulatory attention.”

A Twitter hashtag, #CUCyberSymposium, has been introduced for the symposium, which will adjourn Friday at 3:45 p.m.
