Georgia United Credit Union and Etowah Valley FCU announce merger plans

DULUTH, GA (April 28, 2015) — The Board of Directors for Georgia United Credit Union (Georgia United), announced its plans to merge with Etowah Valley Federal Credit Union (Etowah Valley FCU), headquartered in Cartersville, Ga.   The proposed merger will serve the citizens of the Bartow County communities and Etowah Valley FCU members will become Georgia United members subject to regulatory and membership approvals.

Etowah Valley Federal Credit Union Board Chair Lonnie Roberts shares, “Etowah Valley FCU Board of Directors had been exploring a partnership with another like-minded credit union for a number of reasons including the desire to expand product and service offerings to members and increased competition in the area.  Georgia United was our choice due to their strong financial health and commitment to member service.

We are excited to be able offer greater resources to our membership through Georgia United’s expanded branch and ATM networks, mobile banking and mobile check deposit and a Member Care Call Center with bi-lingual support.”

Georgia United’s Board Chairman Tom Dickson agrees. “Strategic mergers between healthy credit unions have become more common in recent years.  When smaller credit unions intentionally partner with a larger credit union, it benefits both organizations as the smaller credit union has immediate access to additional services and delivery channels and the larger credit union gains additional members who are interested in their services.  Georgia United is looking forward to this partnership to expand our reach into Bartow County.”

The proposed merger would provide Bartow County communities with greater access to branch and ATM networks across the state. The merger, subject to credit union members’ and regulatory approvals, was approved by the boards of both credit unions and is expected to close on August 1. The credit unions would then merge and open as one on August 3.  Upon completion of the merger, the two credit unions will move forward as one legal entity, operating under the name and charter of Georgia United Credit Union. Both credit unions have long histories of service in the Northern Atlanta areas.
