Posted on January 6, 2014

DES MOINES, IA (January 6, 2014) —  The Iowa Credit Union Foundation (ICUF) is pleased to announce the start of its Warren A. Morrow Memorial Scholarship program, which will award $5,750 in scholarships to six Iowa students.

Two different scholarship programs are available through the 2014 Warren A. Morrow Memorial Scholarship program.

The first is a scholarship for high school seniors with a projected graduation date of 2014. This high school scholarship competition will award a total of $3,750 to four students. The first place prize is $1,500; second place is $1,000; third place is $750 and fourth place is $500.

The second program is the post- high school scholarship, which is open to any person who is entering or attending an accredited undergraduate, graduate or vocational program. This category will award two $1,000 scholarships.

Applicants must complete an online entry form found on IowaCreditUnionFoundation.org and are required to answer the following question in no more than 500 words. Essay questions are designed to encourage learning about the credit union movement and its mission.

Financial literacy is now part of Iowa’s Department of Education’s core curriculum.
What are the most important aspects of money management that should be taught when it comes to savings, checking, borrowing or investing for the long term?
How can credit unions help you and others with financial education?

Judges will base their scores on originality, clarity, meaningful content, accurate presentation of facts, adherence to contest rules, spelling, grammar and punctuation. The deadline for applications is February 7, 2014. Winners will be notified via mail in April 2014, and the results will be posted on www.IowaCreditUnionFoundation.org.

“We are delighted to launch our Warren A. Morrow Memorial scholarship program,” said Dale Owen, president of ICUF. “It is particularly timely given the current economic situation and the greater financial difficulties students are experiencing in the pursuit of furthering their education. We are thankful for the generous support of Iowa credit unions, which have come together to help us offer these scholarships.”
