KALAMAZOO AND BATTLE CREEK, MI – They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but Tuesday may be the exception.

In Battle Creek, Coldwater and Albion, United Educational Credit Union will give away 10 free lunches at a designated local eatery to its members. (Nonmembers’ lunches will be half off.)

“United Educational CU is proud to support local small businesses and families in the areas we serve, and CU Lunch Local is a terrific opportunity for us to put our money where it belongs – in the local community,” said Fran Godfrey, president and chief executive officer of United Educational Credit Union, in a statement.

The effort is part of a statewide “cash mob” event dubbed the “CU Lunch Local” program. During the day-long event, designed to encourage people to buy local, Southwest Michigan credit unions and their employees will buy breakfast, lunch or gifts for staff from local businesses.

“CU Lunch Local is an example of the credit union difference, where we can make a direct impact on local businesses in the Kalamazoo area and show that we’re there for them,” said Nancy Loftis, marketing manager at First Community Federal Credit Union, in a statement.
