3 big reasons not to install a pool

Maybe you’ve seen the commercial where the dad is tired of mowing the grass in the hot summer, and he’s also tired of chauffeuring his daughter to her friend’s house. His solution is to “make a splash” and install a pool in their backyard. Now he has less grass to cut and his daughter doesn’t want to leave in the summertime. Sounds like a great idea, right? Well it’s a commercial, so of course it sounds like a great idea. But as Coach Corso would say, “Not so fast, my friend.” Here are three HUGE reasons you don’t want to put in a swimming pool.

It ain’t cheap: First of all, the installation alone is going to cost a lot more than a yearly membership in the Jelly of the Month Club. Try more like the price of one of those boring sedans from the Price is Right. And if you’re prepared to pony up the cash to get one installed, how about the fact that you may have to pay more than $500 a year just for the chemicals needed to keep it going all summer. And even if you don’t mind spending that money, are you willing to spend the time to keep it clean all summer? I hope so, because if not you may be shelling out three times that much to have a company maintain it for you.

Damage is costly: Pool liners break. A tear might only cost you a few hundred bucks. But if you have to replace the whole thing, the number is going to be more like a few thousand. And don’t forget about pumps and plumbing. These can easily be high-dollar repairs.

Insurance can be a nightmare: Insurance companies don’t like diving boards, so you can almost 100% forget about having one. Plus, even with extra coverage to go along with your homeowner’s insurance, who wants to have to deal with the possibility of getting sued? And even more than, can you imagine having to deal with insurance companies while feeling the emotions of knowing someone was injured or worse while enjoying themselves at your pool? Yikes.
