3 questions to ask a colleague who’s quitting

You are happy with where you are at work. Everything seems to be going smoothly. But then one of your work colleagues surprises you by deciding to quit. Are there things about the office that prompted their resignation? Here are three important questions to ask a fellow coworker who is quitting.

Were you unhappy?
Any negative feelings your colleague had while working with you may come as a surprise if they never disclosed their discontent. But, discuss with them (if they are willing) the specific factors that led to their decision to go elsewhere. Was it the boss, other colleagues, or other aspects of their role in the company? Knowing this information may help you to make improvements to your own interoffice relationships. It may also give you a better understanding of your boss’ expectations for the office.

What would you have changed?
Your colleague may feel they could have done a few things differently to solidify a better future while working at your company. Did they put enough passion and effort into each project or were they indifferent and lacking motivation? If they have certain regrets that they wish to share, their feelings may give you the drive to be more productive, hardworking, and enthusiastic.

Can we keep in touch?
If your relationship with your colleague was friendly while you worked together, nothing says you can’t remain friends even after they’ve quit. If it’s important to you that you keep in touch, tell them how you feel. Just because they didn’t find their place at the organization and you are choosing to stay doesn’t mean that should come between you. So, make sure they’ll feel comfortable staying in touch then invite them to lunch or to grab a drink.
