3 things to think about when moving to a new home

There’s nothing quite like making an offer on your first home. Honestly, it’s probably pretty exciting to make an offer on your second or third home as well. That feeling of living somewhere new and different is a hard feeling to duplicate. The anticipation of moving is an exciting time in anyone’s life, but what are you forgetting? Surely, it’s not all sunshine and butterflies. When it comes to moving, here are three things you should think about…

Who’s moving you: If you’ve ever bought a home before I’m sure you know all about closing costs and fees. But what about the moving itself? Your stuff isn’t just going to stand up and follow you to your new home. Have you saved up enough to hire movers? Are your friends and family going to help? Sure, paying your buddies with beer and pizza may be enough to get a few hours of their time, but is it too big of a job for you and a couple friends? These are things you’ll need to know.

Are you ready for new bills: If you’ve lived with roommates or in an apartment, you may not have ever had certain expenses to think about. Maybe your power or gas bill was previously in a roommate’s name. Maybe your water bill was included with your apartment. When getting these services put into your name, you may find that you have some upfront costs that you hadn’t considered. Make sure you find out about these things and have a little extra saved just for these purposes.

Have you compared and contrasted: If you’ve decided to move, then my guess is that your new place has a lot more pros than cons as compared to your current residence. But have you thought of every little thing? What’s the yard like for your pets? Do you have a place to store your lawn mower? Do you feel comfortable keeping everything that was in your garage in a carport? Does your new street have heavier traffic? Think about your home and your life and make a list of things you need to troubleshoot once you’re in your new place.
