4 things smart employees never disclose in the office

We spend more time at the office than we do at home with our families. That being said, it’s important we don’t get too comfortable with our colleagues. All too often, employees lose sight of what is appropriate and what’s not when it comes to work relationships. It’s okay to open up to colleagues, but be mindful of the following four things that intelligent employees should never reveal at work.

Salary
If you feel the need to converse with loved ones about finances and your work compensation, trust your instincts. But, when it comes to chatter in the office about who makes what, bow out of that conversation gracefully. Chances are when this topic is brought up, coworkers will begin to compare salaries, and this could lead to resentment and tension. What you make is your business and to avoid workplace negativity, keep your salary to yourself.

Job hunt

You may not be totally satisfied with your place at work and are working on finding something new. But, if you’re a smart employee, you’ll keep this to yourself. You can’t technically get fired for job searching, but it does show your boss and your coworkers that your heart probably isn’t in your current position. If you have interviews and you’re nervous or excited, or you’re busy with the search, keep your emotions in check. You never know- you may decide to stay at your job and you don’t want your colleagues or your superior to judge you for having looked elsewhere.

Opinions on others

Even if you feel very strongly about someone, keep your feelings to yourself. No one likes a gossip and it’s important that you don’t cast yourself in a negative light by causing unnecessary drama. Your opinions may be valid, but sharing how you feel personally about others can make you look untrustworthy and immature. Stick to your work and maintain a professional attitude.

Religious/political views
It may seem obvious to not talk about religion or politics while at work, but in today’s society, everything seems more out in the open. People have very strong beliefs and feel passionately about various issues and many will choose to discuss their feelings in the workplace. If this occurs, it’s best to remain professional, but a smart employee refrains from these topics all together. Emotions run high when these issues are discussed so to prevent workplace drama, stick to strictly work subjects.
