4 unexpected deals at TJMaxx

I’ve always been a last minute, only-when-I-need-it kind of shopper. I’m the one who will desperately search for an outfit a week before a wedding or conference.

What I’ve learned from a fashionable, shopping expert friend is that it’s smarter to look for deals throughout the year so you are always ready for any event. And TJMaxx is her go-to store.

According to GOBankingRates.com, shoppers can save up to 60% on retail prices for clothing and home goods at TJMaxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods. (They are all owned by the same parent company.) And with nearly 1,200 stores in the U.S., TJMaxx is one of the largest clothing retailers in the country, so chances are there is one near you.

The first time my friend took me to TJMaxx I felt overwhelmed. No list or plan before shopping? How will I survive? But she said it’s the best way to experience TJMaxx.

A few TJMaxx shopping tips she swears by include never heading to the clearance rack first, because it’s already been picked over and popular sizes go quickly. The weekly restock is generally after they close on Tuesdays so you’ll get first crack at new finds on Wednesdays. Look for red tags; those are clearance items. Yellow tags are final clearance. If you see something you like and it’s a yellow tag, buy it. That price will not be discounted any further.

If you live in or near larger cities, make the most of The Runway collection, which are identified by purple tags. You can find high-end designer items featured at boutiques and upscale department stores here, without the price tags that would normally make you faint.

Call me a convert – her system works. Now TJMaxx is the only place I’ll buy clothes and these items:

  1. Dog beds

They have a great selection of stylish but functional dog beds in all sizes (Yes, even for your extra large dog) for under $40.

  1. Pillows

Whatever size, down or down-free, they’ve got it. Bring on the guests!

  1. Designer sunglasses

You’ll find Tori Burch and more at the jewelry counter. Talk about hidden gems!

  1. Kids’ branded athletic gear and more

You can find the dri-weave branded T-shirts, shorts and leggings kids love to live in without going broke. Overflow from stores like Justice can also be found here at very reasonable prices.
