4 ways to make budgeting fun-ish

Let’s be honest, nothing about budgeting seems/sounds/feels fun. So, saying I’ve got three ways to make budgeting fun probably makes you want to tell me to get lost. I get it. But look, even though it’s not exactly laser tag or bungee jumping, there are ways you can make it a little more enjoyable. So here are four ways you can make budgeting a little more fun-ish…

Make it a competition: If you’re living paycheck to paycheck and you’re tired of that life, one idea would be to get with your friends and find out who else needs a budget, like yesterday. Gather those friends together and see who can spend the least amount of money over the next month. Winner gets the bragging rights and the losers have to buy the winner something small as a trophy. Preferably a trophy you can eat, like a milkshake.

Learn new ways to save: If you’ve been overspending on take-out, ask yourself why. If your answer is “because I can’t cook”, then maybe it’s time you learn to cook. Take a class or two, or just check out YouTube for some free cooking tips. Either way, once you enjoy the dishes that Chef You makes, you won’t have to keep wasting your hard-earned cash on curbside pickup.

Use technology: Technology usually makes things more fun. This could be true for budgeting too. Instead of making out a list of income and bills on a sheet of paper, find a finance app that does all that work for you. It’ll save you some time and make your life a lot easier.

Give yourself some tiny rewards: Rewarding yourself may not sound like a financially sound idea, but if you put in the work, why not give yourself a pat on the back? At the end of the month, if savings are up and spending is down, you should give yourself a little something as a prize. Just don’t go too crazy.
