Breakwater Federal Credit Union
Breakwater Federal Credit Union was founded by employees of a mining college in Houghton, Michigan in 1952. Since then, it moved into a building off-campus, acquired Pelkie Copper Country Community Credit Union, and changed from an occupational charter (only college employees qualified for membership) to a community charter (anyone in Houghton, Keweenaw, and Baraga Counties qualifies for membership). The credit union changed its name in June 2022 to eliminate any remaining confusion regarding membership qualifications. Breakwater FCU ended 2024 with approximately 10,422 members and $134.7 million in assets
