HOCU deepens community roots with annual school supply drive benefiting HUGS Hawaii

HONOLULU, HI (July 2, 2026) |

Honolulu Federal Credit Union (HOCU), a community-focused credit union serving approximately 20,000 members across Oʻahu, has wrapped up another successful school supply drive in partnership with HUGS Hawaii. Running April 27 through June 9, the campaign mobilized members and staff at all branch locations around a cause that reflects the cooperative values credit unions were built on: people helping people.

Over the course of the six-week drive, members and staff at all branches contributed a variety of school essentials, including backpacks, notebooks, pencils, calculators, scissors, and more. All donated items went directly to HUGS Hawaii, a local nonprofit providing support services to more than 400 seriously ill children and their families across Oʻahu. The supplies were distributed to school-aged children currently in classes, easing one more burden for families already managing extraordinary circumstances.

“Credit unions exist to serve their members and communities, not just financially, but in ways that reflect what really matters to people,” said Mark Munemitsu, President/CEO of HOCU. “Partnering with HUGS Hawaii over the last few years is an expression of that mission. These families are dealing with things no parent should have to face, and if we can take one worry off their plate, that’s exactly what we’re here to do.”

The school supply drive is one of several community partnerships HOCU supports throughout the year, alongside member events and local sponsorships. HOCU has partnered with HUGS Hawaii for several years, building a consistent, hands-on relationship with the organization and the families it serves.

HOCU, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, continues to expand its community footprint as it looks ahead to its next chapter. For more information about HOCU and its community programs, visit myhocu.com.
