CASE Credit Union teaches kids financial literacy

Lansing-area credit union works with city’s summer camp program, Boys and Girls Club

Just like learning to read and studying geography, CASE Credit Union believes children should learn to manage their finances at a young age.

That’s why CASE Credit Union’s Education Team has collaborated with the City of Lansing’s Parks and Recreation Summer Camp program to teach children financial literacy for the third consecutive year.

Olivia McCormick, CASE’s Education Program Coordinator, said the campers look forward to the games, which involve teamwork and fun ways to learn about financial responsibility.

The Lansing summer camp involves children ages 10 to 13. McCormick said it is important to keep the kids learning during the summer, so they don’t struggle when school begins in the fall.

“We do it because it is important to teach kids money management,” McCormick said. “We recently played a game where students crafted their own ice-cream cones. Every scoop had a value, and the kids did the math. It is a fun way for them to learn something important that will help them in the future.”

“The credit union also teams up with the Boys and Girls Club of Lansing to lead the children in original games that teach them the value of being financially responsible” said CASE Assistant Vice President of Marketing Molly Summerfield. CASE Education Team members visit the Boys and Girls Club twice a month year-round, playing games that teach financial literacy to children ages 7 to 9 and 13 to 17.
