From Over-Managing to Coaching

By Michael Neill, CSE

This is our next-to-last "Missional Monday." Today I want to follow up on ourCUES Symposium: A CEO/Chairman Exchange session on missional leadership by initiating an exchange with you about the idea that missional leaders move the organization from over-managing to coaching.

Missional Leaders Understand the Difference Between Management and Coaching

We have previously presented the differences, as they relate to missional leadership, between coaching and management.

  • Management focuses on outcomes.
  • Management focuses on processes.
  • Coaching focuses on behaviors.
  • Coaching focuses on people.

It is important to note here that I am not in opposition to management. Management is a good thing. However, many organizations I have worked with have a strong tendency to over-manage and under-coach, by a significant factor. Over-management and under-coaching creates disengaged employees who do only what is required.
