Credit unions . . . be like nurses!

During the country’s most recent crises, heroes and leaders have emerged with courage, humility and passion. These leaders became heroes in their communities during the country’s most trying time:

  • ’92 So. CA Riots – Community and political leaders
  • 9/11 – Police, first responders, fire fighters
  • Hurricanes – Relief organizations
  • Active shooters – Families, teachers, communities
  • Financial crisis – Well, not many heroes emerged during that crisis

Throughout this COVID-19 pandemic, the nurses (as well as doctors and an array of first responders) are the clear heroes and should be revered and celebrated.

It has been inspirational to watch, learn from, and applaud these amazing nurses and doctors. Their day-to-day heroics have been remarkable. History will underscore just how magnificent their efforts have been throughout this unthinkable storm.

As it pertains to crisis response, it is important to recognize and appreciate the front-line health care providers working selflessly to help their patients and communities. One of the most notable attributes that we are witnessing is that they are not necessarily seeking attention. They are just doing their job with bravery, desire, and humbleness. The local and national attention has come to them naturally, without self-touting.

The credit union community can take a similar approach as these beloved nurses have taken during the pandemic. What if, during this pandemic, credit unions cared for their members relatively similar to how nurses care for their patients? What if you cared for the insistent financial pains of your members, like nurses treat their patients’ pain? Would it be different?

We encourage your credit union to take a closer look at how the nursing workforce acts during a crisis. While they are performing tremendous deeds and working tirelessly, they ARE NOT seeking recognition. They focus on doing what is right and in the best interest of their patients or clients. They ARE NOT putting out advertising or billboards plugging their efforts. They’re just doing.

So during this crisis marathon, please refrain from publicizing all the wonderful things you’re credit union is doing. Rather, roll-up your sleeves and courageously support your members and community . . . and seek no praise.  Your reward is simply the help you’re providing in times of crisis and pain.

Credit unions . . . be like nurses!
