Across the United States, credit union leagues are known as powerful champions of advocacy, compliance, education and growth for the credit unions they serve. But increasingly, many are expanding their impact beyond state lines and national borders—playing a meaningful role in advancing the global credit union movement.
Global changemakers
At the Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions (WFCU), we have the privilege of working with leagues that are both firmly rooted in their local communities and deeply committed to doing global good. These organizations are not just strong domestic advocates—they are also global changemakers.
All leagues are active members of the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL) and consistent supporters of WFCU’s mission. These associations help ensure the credit union movement remains people-focused, globally connected, and ready to face the challenges of tomorrow.
Two shining examples
We are proud to highlight two leagues that exemplify this dual commitment to local communities and global impact: the Cornerstone League and the Michigan Credit Union League.
The Cornerstone League, in tandem with the Cornerstone Foundation, continues to integrate global engagement into its international relations committee, being the first to respond when credit union systems around the world face moments of crisis. Whether crisis is due to political unrest, climate disasters or financial instability, Cornerstone is posed to help by including the Worldwide Foundation on their annual dues statement as a funding option showcasing their support as well as enabling credit unions in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas to seamlessly support our global mandate.
This year, the Michigan Credit Union League took its global commitment to a new level by engaging in WFCU’s Global Bridges initiative. Through this program, Michigan is building a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship with the Bahamas Co-operative League. MCUL’s focus is to support league CUSO formation in the Bahamas as well as share insights on key issues such as digitization and shared services. This model of cross-border collaboration reflects the best of the credit union spirit—sharing expertise, building capacity, and fostering innovation through partnership.
Engaging women and YPs – at home and abroad
Through WFCU’s flagship initiatives—Global Women’s Leadership Network (GWLN) and the World Young Credit Union Professionals (WYCUP) program—leagues across the country have opened doors for women and emerging leaders and driven meaningful representation across gender, generation and geography. From funding scholarships to supporting global engagement events, their commitment ensures that the credit union voice remains diverse and future-focused.
Global advocacy impacts US advocacy
While WFCU leads with engagement and connection, advocacy is an essential part of the global work. On the world stage, the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU)—WFCU’s partner organization—advocates before global financial rule-setters, ensuring the cooperative voice is heard. At home, AACUL is the unifier of the U.S. credit union league system, bringing together all state and regional leagues to coordinate advocacy, strategy and thought leadership at the national level.
AACUL plays a crucial role in strengthening the league system, amplifying the voice of credit unions before federal policymakers, and ensuring that local cooperative institutions can thrive in a dynamic financial services environment. But its impact doesn’t stop there. By collaborating with WFCU, AACUL helps bring global perspective into U.S. credit union conversations—reminding us that while credit unions serve locally, we are part of a much broader international movement.
Strategic advantage through global engagement
That global perspective is not only valuable—it’s essential. In an interconnected world, the challenges facing credit unions—regulatory shifts, cybersecurity threats, leadership pipelines—are rarely confined to one country. Leagues that engage globally are better equipped to support their credit unions at home.
Leagues are setting a powerful example by demonstrating that global engagement is not just a nice-to-have—it’s a strategic advantage. By supporting WFCU, leagues are helping create a stronger, more connected global credit union ecosystem—and reinforcing the idea that doing global good begins with strong, visionary leadership here at home.
