How did your kids learn about credit unions?

If I were to bet $100, I would bet that they probably learned it from you. Or maybe…they still don’t know what a credit union is.

Now let’s think about your membership. Do you know how many of your members are parents with children? Are those members telling their kids about your credit union? Will their kids eventually join your credit union?

Based on a study from CUNA, a whopping 60% of members’ children are currently non-members. These members’ children could represent a massive future member base for your credit union. Imagine if we could turn your members’ children into your credit union’s biggest advocates? Imagine if we could get those digitally native children to rave about your credit union on their social media accounts and in their high schools, colleges, and workplaces. That right there is how credit unions will thrive in the decades to come – not from the standard marketing materials, but from deeply connecting with parents and their children.

So how can credit unions connect with parents and their children?

Parents today are less comfortable talking to their children about money than sex. According to the APA, 95% of people believe that parents should be talking with their kids about money, yet only 37% of people report that they often talk with their family members about it.  Many parents rely on schools for this financial education, while all that schools provide are three-hour long presentations, many hosted by FIs.

Parents need a tool that they trust to teach their children about personal finance, and this is where the opportunity comes in for credit unions.

As Gen Zers ourselves, we see how our parents struggle to teach us about money. So together, we built Zogo, a gamified financial literacy app that is now co-branded by over 70 credit unions in 35 states. Since launching last November, our app has garnered nearly 100,000 parents and their children who have completed over 1,500,000 education modules, with their local credit union’s logo right on the screen.
