On-Site: SCCUL 2011 Annual Meeting Wrap-Up

By: Randy Smith, Publisher/Managing Editor CUinsight

I had the opportunity this past weekend to attend the South Carolina Credit Union League 2011 Annual Meeting.  With South Carolina being the state I live and work in I try to get involved with as many credit union functions and events as possible here.  I truly believe that while CUinsight is a source of news and information my contribution to the credit union movement must also be made locally and the great people of the credit unions and league of South Carolina make that possible.  While as a movement we   need to have a national voice the most powerful voice in my opinion happens in the community’s we live and work.

The South Carolina Credit Union League Meeting is held annually in Myrtle Beach, SC.  This year’s event surpassed last year with its number of attendees as well as exhibitors.  Many topics were discussed at the event including; leveraging cooperative-ness, increased regulations for credit union boards, hot-button examination issues and capital reform.  But the overwhelming discussions were on the Durbin amendment, with its effect on interchange fees and increasing lending in 2011.

Steve Fowler, Pres/CEO of the SCCUL, welcomed everyone to the meeting and talked about the big pictured successes of 2010.  More members, more assets and more shares for South Carolina credit unions in 2010 but less in lending.

The conference ended with Bill Cheney, Pres/CEO of CUNA, making remarks at the Annual Business Meeting.  The Durbin Amendment with the impact on interchange fees is the most pressing issues facing the credit union lobby and the future of how credit unions operate.  Also discussed were the CU tax exemption and member business lending.  Mr. Cheney did state that credit unions nationally need to be on the offensive more instead of always playing defense.
