Onsite: Day one from #CUNAGAC 2017!

The first full day of the 2017 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference kicks off today as over 5000 credit union advocates have descended upon Washington D.C. to support CUNA’s message of “Powerful Cause, Positive Effect.”

Monday’s first general session will kick off at 9am with a message from keynote speaker Kat Cole, group president of FOCUS brands. Cole will speak about the three components of a successful brand: remaining relevant to your core target customer, providing something unique to your members, and making sure your brand keeps its promise to members.

Attendees on Monday will also hear from CUNA President Jim Nussle and Board Chairman Rod Staatz, and will have the opportunity to attend a vast assortment of breakout sessions led by industry leaders. These sessions will include topics such as the payments landscape, the economic outlook and credit unions, and a look at unfair, deceptive, or abusive acts or practices (UDAAP).

The night will conclude with the National Credit Union Foundation’s Dinner and the Herb Wagner Memorial Awards, which recognize “the credit union movement’s highest national honors for Outstanding Individual Achievement and Outstanding Program.”

The ED (Filene) Talk was on Sunday evening, featuring a speech from Derreck Kayongo, founder of the Global Soap Project and CEO of the Center for Civil and Human Rights. Kayongo discussed how his work is a lot like the work credit union’s do, in that they’re both “people helping people.” Kayongo also went over the four key factors behind his professional success – service, education, leadership, and faith. Since its founding in 2009, the Global Soap Project has made an impact in more than 90 countries, where many people die each year due to a lack of proper hygiene.
