Onsite: NAFCU’s 2012 Technology and Security Conference

by: David Miller, Co-Founder and CTO/CFO, CUinsight.com

NAFCU’s 2012 Technology and Security Conference just concluded in Las Vegas. This was a great two and half days loaded with presentations and outstanding vendor product displays. Attendees were busy networking with their peers and taking in a lot of valuable information. Speakers had a variety of backgrounds. Including those from companies with new product and service offerings to companies that are well established in the credit union community. The presentations offered insight and information that attendees will be able to immediately apply to their credit unions when they return home.

The first day covered technology and new media, Information Security trends and strategies, the top 10 credit union fraud claims, and how technology, training, and networking can help minimize the impact of robberies.

Day 2 was scheduled with a full agenda. Attendees listened intently to the presentations about updated FFIEC guidance on authentication, Phishing, IT risk in a cloud environment, and internal control certification. The day closed with an outstanding and very information discussion from Navy Federal’s AVP of Information Security, Ray Murphy. His topic was 2 minute drill: No Huddle Defense. Ray discussed fraud, insider abuse, authentication, mobile devices, and several other topics.

Thursday may have been a short day but certainly was not short on material. After having breakfast and talking with the vendors, attendees were bestowed with presentations discussing data breach preparation and response, a common lending language, and how to prepare for an IT outage or business interruption.

NAFCU’s 2012 Technology and Security conference was a can’t miss event. Knowledgeable speakers provided timely information on relevant topics. The technology and innovation showcase allowed the attendees to interact with the vendors and learn more about technology and services to help their credit unions. This event was packed with a great agenda that provided a generous amount of time for peers to discuss the technologies and services. The attendees that I had the opportunity to speak with sang praises about the organization of this event and remarked that they will be returning again next year.
