15th Annual Race Against Racism to raise funds for racial justice programming

On your mark, get set, go! The YWCA of Greater Harrisburg and Platinum Sponsor PSECU have announced that the 15th Annual Race Against Racism will take place in Harrisburg on April 27 from 8:30 a.m. to noon - and fundraising has commenced. Held rain or shine, the race supports the YWCA’s mission to eliminate racism, empower women and girls, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Proceeds of the 5K run/walk event will help sustain the YWCA’s racial justice programs throughout the year ahead.

“We are excited to invite the community to join us in the fight against racism. For 15 years, the YWCA Greater Harrisburg has organized this event as a way for people to come together to show strength for the many differences we see each day,” the organization’s CEO Mary Quinn stated. “Our region has a long history of diversity, and we want to recognize the work that continues each day. We also want to celebrate the journey that has brought us together as a group of individuals united for a common cause.”

Starting and ending at Soldier’s Grove (531-559 Commonwealth Ave.), the Race Against Racism will follow a designated route through Downtown and Midtown Harrisburg that highlights locations of importance related to the city’s diverse history and journey toward equality.

“PSECU is proud to serve as the Platinum Sponsor of the Race Against Racism again this year, as we have since its initiation 15 years ago,” said PSECU Public Relations Coordinator Karen Rousche, who is also Chair of this year’s event. “On behalf of our more than 450,000 members and the communities we serve throughout Pennsylvania and beyond, PSECU aims to collaborate with and support organizations that are making a positive impact. That impact is clear in the YWCA’s Race Against Racism, which not only raises awareness of important social justice issues, but also brings together people from all walks of life for a constructive, positive purpose. We thank the YWCA for all it does to better the Greater Harrisburg Region and for allowing us to partner with them in those efforts.”

Community members are encouraged to pre-register for the race as individuals or as part of a team. Day-of registration and packet pick up is also available, starting at 7:30 a.m. Those interested in volunteering to serve as race marshals at points along the event route should contact the YWCA at 717.234.7931.

Following the Race Against Racism, participants are encouraged to attend Humanity Fest, a free event that includes food trucks and vendors, live music, dances, and performances. The Annual Kid’s Fun Run will also take place during Humanity Fest, starting at 10 a.m.
