1st United Credit Union helps Alameda County students get MoneyWise

PLEASANTON, CA (February 28, 2018) — As a community-based, not-for-profit financial institution, 1st United Credit Union is dedicated to helping raise a generation of financially fit individuals through education. Since 2007, they have supported over 14,000 Alameda County students between the ages of 5 and 24 on their path to becoming moneywise.

“Financial education is a real need for young adults and children in our community,” says Lisha Fabris, Communications Manager for 1st United. “Families often don’t have the knowledge or the time to teach financial literacy at home and schools don’t have the resources.”

According to Chaplain College’s recent National Report Card on State Efforts to Improve Financial Literacy in High Schools, California was given an “F” for its efforts to teach high school students the basics of personal finance. 1st United hopes to raise that grade in Alameda County.

Through their MoneyWise program, 1st United provides fundamental budgeting and financial planning resources. The program includes workbooks and online programs for teachers to utilize at no charge, in-class workshops that the Credit Union leads, and events which simulate real-life spending and budgeting. Topics include budgeting, saving money, starting a business, building credit, protecting identity from theft and more. In just the past year, 1st United has worked with students at Granada High School (Livermore), Castro Valley High School (Castro Valley), Alameda High School (Alameda), Woodrow Wilson Elementary School (San Leandro), Hayward Adult School (Hayward), Amador Valley High School (Pleasanton), James Logan High School (Union City), and many others.

1st United is available to teach financial education workshops to all ages in Alameda County. To inquire about financial education for your school or community organization, email communityrelations@1stunitedcu.org.
