Advance Financial recognizes two college bound members

Anthony J. Summerville and Benjamin Cruz, Jr. awarded Cha-Ching Teen Club college scholarships

Increases in college tuition, fees and room and board continue to significantly outpace the rate of inflation. Many college bound students and their parents are struggling to make the dream of attending college a reality. Advance Financial offers eligible members of its Cha-Ching Teen Club the opportunity to apply for two $750 scholarships to help with expenses during their first year of college.

“This year’s two well-deserving scholarship winners, Anthony J. Summerville and Benjamin Cruz, Jr., are both exceptional recipients who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, community involvement and moral character,” stated Jerry Gomez, President/CEO of AFFCU.

The two students and their families were recently recognized at AFFCU’s 80th Annual Meeting where they received a standing ovation from the 100+ attendees at the meeting. “These two scholarship award winners exhibit all the traits of leaders of the future,” commented Chairperson Jan Vamos. “We know they will make their families, their communities and their credit union very proud,” added Vamos.

Anthony J. Summerville lives in Valparaiso and plans to attend Purdue University where he will study engineering. His career ambition is to develop a computer software and hardware business. In addition to his excellent scholastic achievements, he participates on his school’s track & field team, band, choir, theater and was the state champion in computer repairs through Business Professionals of America. He also has participated in mission trips with his church.

Benjamin Cruz, Jr. resides in East Chicago and plans to attend Indiana University Bloomington to study media and arts. His career goal is to become a screenwriter and graphic designer and eventually write his own comic book series. A current member of the Highland National Honors Society, the Highland National Art Honor Society and the Spanish Honors Society, Benjamin is vice president of his school’s Multimedia Club. He volunteers at his community’s schools, businesses and churches.
