Affinity Plus supports Wounded Warrior Learn2Ski veteran event on Lake Zumbro Aug. 10
ST PAUL, MN (August 8, 2016) — Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union will be on hand to support, assist and thank southeastern Minnesota veterans and their families Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the third-annual Rochester SkiDox water-ski team Wounded Warrior Learn2Ski Day event on Lake Zumbro.
The day-long event begins at 10 a.m. as SkiDox members and volunteers provide about 20 veterans and their families a day to try water-skiing; kayaking; tubing; swimming; and more, according to planners.
Veterans and their families also will dine at Fisherman’s Inn in Oronoco, Minn., and then watch a special SkiDox team performance and salute to veterans from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Whitney Butlin, Affinity Plus Rochester Branch member advisor, is the daughter of Dave Butlin, a long-time SkiDox member. She credits her father and grandfather, Elton, a World War II Army sergeant and veteran, for inspiring Affinity Plus’ commitment to Learn2Ski Day.
“Dad told me that for 23 years the SkiDox held the handicapped water-ski day, but about three years ago he realized that in all that time they’d never helped a vet,” Butlin said. “He wanted more than anything to serve those who’ve served and sacrificed for us, so the day was born.”
Billie Ellingson, Affinity Plus Rochester branch manager, added that Affinity Plus employs several veterans “and many of our members are veterans, too. This event gives us the chance to thank our local veterans and their families in person. We get to give back directly and see the impact.”
Planners say they’ve lined up all the veterans and families for Learn2Ski Day, but they encourage community members to come, volunteer and attend the evening performance. The team will take free-will donations at the gate, and all contributions will remain in the community to help local veterans.
