INDIANAPOLIS, IN (November 12, 2014) -- Smokey Stowers, who serves on the board of directors for Allegius Federal Credit Union in Burns Harbor, was inducted into the Indiana Credit Union Hall of Fame during the Indiana Credit Union League’s statewide Convention. He was honored at the Chairman’s Awards Banquet at the JW Marriott Hotel on October 17.
Stowers retired from Bethlehem Steel as an electrician after a long career there, and he has been a volunteer member of the credit union board for 44 years — since 1970 when it was known as Bethlehem Employees Federal Credit Union. In that time, Stowers has served the credit union in a number of capacities including as chairman of the board. He currently leads the credit union’s Prime Times Travelers Club which offers outings for members and through which he has accompanied credit union members to destinations near and far. He has also been active in the Northwest Indiana Chapter of Credit Unions, and he is a graduate of CUNA Management School.
Stowers is most familiar to credit unions through his work with the Indiana Credit Union Political Action Committee (ICUPAC) where he served as chairman from 1987-2009. He has developed close relationships with many legislators over the years, and he has visited Congressmen in Washington, D.C. on numerous occasions. In 1993, he was honored as the League’s Volunteer Achievement Award recipient to recognize his contributions and dedication to the credit union business.
Outside the credit union, he is active in the Lions Club and the Moose Organization where he is a past recipient of many honors and currently serves as president.
