LEAGUE CITY, Texas (June 7, 2012) – AMOCO Federal Credit Union understands the importance of a good education and that is why we wanted to offer our Azone members a helping hand. For the fourth consecutive year, AMOCO has awarded scholarships to deserving students in hopes of helping them to achieve their dreams. As with all selection processes, the decision on which candidate to ultimately choose is not easy.  This year AMOCO had a very difficult time choosing only three candidates from this year’s pool of 58 applicants.

AMOCO is happy to announce their 2012 scholarship recipients! Christine LaFoy, a 2012 Dickinson High School graduate, will also be receiving her Associate Degree in Science from the College of the Mainland Collegiate High School Program in June. Christine is a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient and has spent considerable time outside of school volunteering at church, Mainland Medical Center in the Institute for Living, Santa’s Kingdom, Ronald McDonald House, and at the Luke Street Ministries in Galveston. Christine is attending the University of Texas at Arlington in the fall where she will pursue a Bachelor Degree in Science. She would also like to attend medical school in the future.

Holly Sherburne, a 2012 Dickinson High School graduate, will also be receiving her Associate Degree in Business from the College of the Mainland Collegiate High School Program in June. While attending Dickinson High School and College of the Mainland, Holly has been in several clubs including: National Honor Society, Business Professionals of America, COM Student Government, Nu Psi Service Organization, and National Society of High School Scholars. In addition to volunteering her time to the community through United Way, Holly has been a tutor for the Kumon Learning Center. Holly is attending the University of Texas in Austin this fall where she was accepted into the McComb’s School of Business. She will major in Finance and minor in Government.

Madeline Cruz obtained her Associate in Arts Degree in 2010 from Saint Petersburg College in Florida. Madeline transferred to Florida State University where she is currently enrolled in the College of Education. While attending Florida State University, Madeline is very involved in her community and volunteers her time to several organizations including: 50 Large, Griffin Heights Learning Center, Senior-to-Senior Tutoring Program, and Handicamp. These programs are designed to supplement the educational needs of children from low socio-economic families, in failing schools, and/or with under-serviced learning disabilities. Her time spent volunteering with these organizations is offering Madeline experience she can later apply in her career as an educator.

AMOCO is proud to provide scholarships for these deserving young adults and wishes them the best of luck in their scholastic endeavors. For applicants interested in applying for the 2013-2014 scholarships, please visit our website at www.AMOCOfcu.org for updates early next year.
