LEAGUE CITY, Texas (August 15, 2011) – On April 20, 1999, the world witnessed what bullying and violence could lead to. It’s a day that will forever be embedded in the minds of society as it was the day of the Columbine High School massacre. Rachel, along with 12 others, would lose their lives at the hands of two of their fellow classmates. Yet through the darkness, Rachel’s powerful yet simple compliments and acts of kindness reignited the flame of life for many across the world.
Less than a year after the tragedy, Darrell and his wife Sandy started Rachel’s Challenge with the intent to honor Rachel’s life and help prevent other families from going through what he and the rest of the Columbine families had endured. It’s a non-profit, non-political, non-religious organization dedicated to advancing with integrity the primary mission of equipping and empowering students and adults to create a positive culture change in their schools and communities. Rachel’s Challenge is a comprehensive set of K-12 programs proven to replace bullying and violence with positive words and actions. It is not a one-time event and through programs and curriculum that stay in school, Rachel’s Challenge strives to motivate and enable individuals to mitigate prejudice, bullying and violence by starting their own chain reaction of kindness and compassion.
AMOCO Federal Credit Union believes in giving back to the community and spreading positive messages. The Galveston County Sheriff’s Department and BP have teamed up with AMOCO to bring Rachel’s Challenge to high schools across Galveston County! To date, Texas City High School, La Marque Middle School, Santa Fe High School, Dickinson High School, Clear Falls High School, and Clear View High School, have signed up to participate in Rachel’s Challenge. AMOCO appreciates the support they are receiving from the sheriff’s department and BP Texas City.
AMOCO would like to challenge YOU and local businesses to get involved by adding your unique link to the chain reaction. Sponsor a school near you or support the program by making a monetary contribution.
