(Aberdeen, June 13, 2012)— Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union (APGFCU) was honored as 2012 Outstanding Business Philanthropist at the 6th annual Harford County Celebration of Philanthropy on Thursday, April 19, 2012, at the Maryland Golf & Country Clubs in Bel Air, Md.

Presented by the Maryland Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP-Maryland), and recognized by Harford County Executive David R. Craig, and Maryland Delegate H. Wayne Norman, Jr., APGFCU’s President/CEO, Don W. Lewis, accepted the Outstanding Business Philanthropist Award at the Celebration of Philanthropy ceremony on National Philanthropy Day.

True to the meaning of philanthropy, the Outstanding Business Philanthropist Award recognizes the contribution of money, along with time and skill, to promote the well-being of others and the betterment of the community. Each year, AFP-Maryland honors community agents of philanthropy at its National Philanthropy Day celebration. National Philanthropy Day is a way of giving special recognition to those in our community who work to improve our world.

Award recipients are nominated and selected by a committee consisting of AFP-Maryland Harford County members and presented to businesses, individuals or families that have demonstrated outstanding civic and charitable responsibility and philanthropic leadership in and around Harford County, Md., and whose example encourages others to take philanthropic leadership roles.

APG Federal Credit Union operates with the philosophy of “people helping people.”  Members and employees participate in and contribute generously to events every year.  More than 50 non-profit organizations are supported annually with time, talent and treasure including The Upper Chesapeake Health Foundation, Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna, Harford Family House, Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County, Meals on Wheels, SARC and many more.

Emphasis on education and financial independence is a primary mission.  In 2011, 80% of community outreach was dedicated to youth financial literacy programs.  Nearly 430 sessions brought face-to-face instruction to more than 10,150 young people.

As a not-for-profit cooperative with its members’ interests at heart, the financial and social well-being of the local communities remains APGFCU’s top priority. Since its founding in 1938, APGFCU continues to fulfill its mission of “people helping people” by returning profits to members in the form of lower loan rates and higher dividends on savings.

AFP is an international organization promoting ethical and effective fundraising with more than 30,000 members worldwide in 230 local chapters.  The Maryland Chapter is one of the larger, with over 350 members.  AFP is a community of fundraising professionals, part of the philanthropic community.  Every day AFP connects with donors, volunteers, foundations, businesses and other non-profit organizations.

Since 1986, AFP has celebrated National Philanthropy Day each November.  Modeled on the success of the Maryland Chapter’s event, Harford County AFP members created a celebration to recognize those who are truly agents of change through philanthropy in this growing community.  For more information about AFP-Maryland, visit afpmaryland.org.
