(Aberdeen, June 15, 2012)— Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union (APGFCU) was presented with the 2012 Highlands Award at the 11th annual Highlands School Awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at The Highlands School in Bel Air, Md.

Patricia Bonney, executive director of The Highlands School, presented the award to Tina Mike, APGFCU’s assistant vice president of financial education, and Claudia Holman, APGFCU’s director of development in Harford County.

Each year, The Highlands School recognizes a local organization that has distinguished itself through innovative practices contributing to the educational experiences for the students served, while collaborating with the broader community for the benefit of all.

This year, the award went to APGFCU for its enthusiasm for encouraging the exploration of math and financial literacy within the context of The Highlands School’s education approach.  From sponsorships to supporting special school events, APGFCU has demonstrated its passionate commitment to serving the educational needs of the students and faculty of The Highlands School.

The Highlands School serves children in Kindergarten through 8th grade who struggle with memory, language processing, Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and other language differences. They teach students who learn differently the skills and strategies needed to become successful, independent learners well-equipped to transition back to a traditional school setting.  The Highlands School is accredited by the Association of Independent Maryland Schools and approved by the Maryland State Department of Education. APG Federal Credit Union operates with the philosophy of “people helping people.”  Emphasis on education and financial independence is a primary mission.  In 2011, 80% of community outreach was dedicated to youth financial literacy programs.  Nearly 430 sessions brought face-to-face instruction to more than 10,150 young people.

As a not-for-profit cooperative with its members’ interests at heart, the financial and social well-being of the local communities remains APGFCU’s top priority. Since its founding in 1938, APGFCU continues to fulfill its mission of “people helping people” by returning profits to members in the form of lower loan rates and higher dividends on savings.

APGFCU is committed to building strong families for a stronger community with 10 branches in Harford and Cecil counties and an eleventh scheduled for Fallston in late 2012.  Membership is free and open to everyone who lives, works, worships, volunteers, or attends school in Harford County or Cecil County.  For more information, call 410-272-4000, and press four, or visit APGFCU.com.
