(Aberdeen, December 1, 2010) — Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union [APGFCU] is proud to announce the local prize winner of its “Spotlight a Soldier” essay contest. The contest invited APGFCU member-owners to nominate local military servicemen or women they feel have distinguished themselves with exceptional courage, kindness, compassion, unselfish character or acts of heroism.
The winner, Brigadier General Guy M. Walsh of Bel Air, Maryland, was selected by a panel of APGFCU judges and awarded a $500 Visa Gift Card.
Brigadier General Guy M. Walsh was nominated by Richard Hisley. General Walsh commanded the Maryland Air National Guard’s 175th Wing in Middle River, Maryland, and is currently deployed to command the 451 Air Expeditionary Wing at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan. Outside of his stellar career, General Walsh is an advocate of the “I am a Patriot” program espoused by the Harford County School System.
General Walsh generously donated the $500 Visa Gift Card to the local chapter of the National Guard Youth Challenge Program. The mission of the National Guard Youth Challenge Program is to intervene in and reclaim the lives of 16-18 year old high school dropouts, producing program graduates with the values, life skills, education, and self-discipline necessary to succeed as productive citizens.
As part of Military Appreciation Month, the “Spotlight a Soldier” contest demonstrates APGFCU’s dedication to serving the financial needs and improving the financial wellness of military families.
