Fairfax, VA – Apple Federal Credit Union celebrated the grand opening of its 33rd Student Run Credit Union on November 29th at Tuscarora High School in Leesburg, Virginia. The event commemorated the revolution and inspiration of the Student Run Credit Union concept.
Early on, Apple Federal Credit Union realized that a valuable tool for financial education and financial literacy is for students to open and take ownership of their own accounts. From this theory, Apple designed Student Run Credit Union’s to help students make sound financial decisions.
“We are always looking for ways to help improve financial literacy within the community. Our relationship with Loudoun County Public Schools is important to us and Apple’s staff works hard to support its teachers and students. We are excited to have the opportunity to help enrich the lives of Tuscarora students with our Student Run Credit Union program,” said Larry Kelly, President/CEO of Apple Federal Credit Union.
The Board of Supervisors of Loudoun County recognized Apple with a plaque commending their commitment and willingness to invest in Loudoun County Public Schools financial education efforts. Over 50 community representatives, school officials, educators and students were onsite as Board of Supervisors Supervisor Kelly Burk and Apple Federal Credit Union President/CEO Larry Kelly cut the ribbon before the
Tuscarora Student Run Credit Union opened for business.
As of today, Apple Federal Credit Union has 33 Student Run Credit Unions spanning five counties in Northern Virginia and, over the past 16 years, opened 12,000 accounts at local high schools.
