“Small credit unions are the heart and soul of the credit union movement,” said Scott Butterfield, YCUP principal. “In my opinion, no other training program exemplifies the heart and soul of the credit union movement like the CUDE program. Our hope is for this scholarship to encourage smaller credit unions to attend this remarkable program. It has undeniably been the best experience for me in my career.”
The National Credit Union Foundation’s DE program brings renewed relevance to the philosophy of “People Helping People,” providing critical lessons in cooperative principles, credit union philosophy, and international development issues while incorporating challenges credit unions face today.
During the week-long DE Training, participants are involved in group exercises, field trips, encouraged to ask questions of visiting speakers, and are required to complete team projects proposing solutions for credit unions to help alleviate or eliminate challenging situations in any given area. Since 1982, more than 1,600 credit union advocates from more than 35 countries have graduated from DE Training to become Credit Union Development Educators (CUDEs).
Alison Carr, YCUP Strategist/Consultant,completed the DE Training in 2001 and earned her International CUDE designation in 2016. Carr also serves on the Foundation’s Credit Union Development Education (CUDE) Advisory Committee.
“The impact of DE, for me, is beyond measure,” Carr concluded. “I honestly wouldn't be where I am today had it not been for experiencing the DE program, and the invaluable network of Developmental Educators across the globe. The program truly fueled my passion, not only for credit unions, but for making a difference in the lives of others. Scott and I believe in this program, and the great work of the Foundation. This is our way of giving back to a program that has given so much to us, and igniting that passion in others.”
