Beans, Jeans, Tutus and Tiaras: Mid-Atlantic Corporate gets creative – and collects 5,000-plus pounds of food – During hunger action month

MIDDLETOWN, PA (October 30, 2013) -- Throughout September, Mid-Atlantic Corporate’s staff geared up to feed those in need as part of Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s “Food Drive Challenge” in recognition of Hunger Action Month. A total of 5,101 pounds of food and water – enough to provide 4,250 meals to individuals across central Pennsylvania – were donated.

“This number more than doubled the 2,500-pound goal the Corporate set out to achieve,” said Janice Appleby, SVP, human resources. “In addition, 13 Mid-Atlantic Corporate employees volunteered their time at the food bank. Enthusiasm for this year’s event was contagious, and staff really worked together to make the food drive a great success.”

To encourage donations, the Corporate offered staff a variety of ways to get involved:

Book Sale

From September 9-20, employees were given the option to donate new or gently used books for a staff book sale. Books could then be purchased for three non-perishable food items per book.

Theme Days

To encourage donations during the week of September 9, employees could follow one of three theme days: Macaroni & Cheese Monday, Wheaties Wednesday and Fruity Friday.

Beans for Jeans

On September 12, the Corporate celebrated “Beans for Jeans,” a special day where staff could dress in jeans in exchange for donating three cans of beans.

The Corporate also devised a friendly competition by dividing the staff into two teams, awarding the team collecting the most donations with a unique prize: selecting a “special” task to be completed by the SVPs of the losing team. Among the jobs considered: kissing a pig, having a water balloon fight and –the task selected – wearing tutus and tiaras.

On October 30, Lori Gall, SVP, Administration; Rodney May, SVP, Member Services; Bruce Six, CIO/SVP; and Howard Stein, COO for Mid-Atlantic Corporate’s CUSO, MY CU Services, proudly wore their tutus and tiaras for the entire day.

“It’s always a successful recipe when you can get the competitive juices flowing for such a great cause,” said Appleby. “Ultimately, our staff came together to help the local community and we are proud of their dedication to support others.”
