“SDCCU has been a proud sponsor of the Ben Vereen Awards since its inception in 2014. This is one of many ways SDCCU supports youth, education and the arts in the community,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck. “We are delighted to recognize not only talented students in San Diego but also the hard work and dedication of theatre teachers through the Best Local Theatre Teacher award.”
The 2016 Ben Vereen Awards, sponsored by SDCCU and held in collaboration with Broadway/San Diego, is a unique scholarship opportunity for talented high school students who have chosen to pursue a career in musical theatre. This is the third year that Broadway/San Diego is producing the competition locally—it is the local branch of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards which has been in existence since 2009. Both the local and national competitions are programs of the Nederlander Organization.
The San Diego high school competition of the Ben Vereen Awards will be held at the Historic Balboa Theatre in Downtown San Diego on Sunday, May 29th. It will include twenty leading female and male nominees, along with awarding Best Musical, Best Drama Teacher and the top 5 Best Essay winners.
The winning Best Actor and Best Actress performers and teachers will be flown to New York for a week of intensive training before they compete in the national finals, The National High School Musical Theatre Awards®, on a Broadway stage for $10,000 toward a college scholarship on Monday, June 27, 2016.
