BHFCU donates $22,000 and distributes 23,300 school supplies to prepare students for the school year

RAPID CITY, SD (August 29, 2023) — Continuing its mission of improving lives, Black Hills Federal Credit Union donated $22,000 and 23,300 school supplies to 80 schools and organizations.

BHFCU’s School Support Drive provides schools and organizations with funds to help kick off a successful school year. This year, the annual effort saw an update when BHFCU heard from schools that their needs were changing.

“This year’s new format put power in the hands of educators,” explained Heidi Bulman, Senior Community Development Officer. “With our monetary donations, they will be able to find solutions unique to the needs of their students.”

From recess equipment upgrades to headphones to software licenses, BHFCU is allowing schools to do what’s best for their kids. Educators will purchase and distribute whatever supplies, subscriptions, and other services students need most.

“With the prices of goods rising, the additional cost to prepare a child for the new school year falls more heavily on some families than others,” Bulman said. “We couldn’t do it alone. Each year, the generosity and excitement of local businesses give us renewed energy to keep the effort going.”

The credit union relies on donations from members, the community, and area businesses across the state. BHFCU staff gets in on the fun, too. They help raise funds through an internal caramel roll sale and online auction, with many items donated by area businesses.

“We’re working with school districts in the communities we serve to help reduce the financial burden felt by families,” said Holli Edwards, BHFCU Vice President Marketing. “At the same time, we also want to ensure educators have the tools they need to fully engage students in classroom activities.”

Donations to the Drive are made through the Black Hills FCU Charitable Fund, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
