Book drive gets kids in Massachusetts reading

HANSCOM AFB, MA (May 14, 2019) — Hanscom Federal Credit Union has collected 2,838 books for the annual children’s book drive sponsored by the Cooperative Credit Union Association (CCUA). The books are distributed by the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless to nonprofit agencies in cities and communities across the commonwealth serving children ranging from babies to teens.

This is the 19th consecutive year Hanscom FCU is contributing to the CCUA drive. Since 2008 they’ve collected a total of 38,404 books for the cause through donations from employees, volunteers, and members who’ve dropped books off at select branches.

“Studies show that kids who are read to when they’re young or who read independently when they’re older, do better in school,” said Paul Marotta, Hanscom FCU’s Chairman Emeritus and Chairman of the CCUA Social Responsibility Committee. “Our credit union is committed to helping younger generations succeed not just in school, but in life. If we can play a small part in turning a child into an eager reader, that’s something we’re happy to do.”

The books will be delivered to the Coalition’s Lynn warehouse the week of May 13th.

Hanscom FCU’s Jim Potter, Chief Operations Officer; Paul Marotta, Chairman Emeritus; David Sprague, President and CEO; and Laura Galeski, Social Responsibility Manager with 2,838 books for the CCUA’s annual children’s book drive.
