Breakwater FCU celebrates 72nd Annual Meeting with leadership elections, scholarships, and community giving

Houghton, MI (April 22, 2026) |

Breakwater Federal Credit Union held its 72nd Annual Business Meeting on April 21, 2026, and held an election for three open board seats. This year’s scholarship recipients and Breakwater’s annual donation recipient were also announced.

Board Seats Filled

The 2026/2027 Board of Directors includes Steve Patchin (Chair), Cindy Cowell (Vice Chair), Anders Hill (Secretary), Renee Ozanich, and Craig Pellizzaro, Jon Rautio, and Julie Seppala.

Scholarship Recipients

Breakwater Federal Credit Union strengthened its commitment to supporting local students this year by increasing its annual scholarship awards from $1,000 to $1,500. By expanding this program, Breakwater continues to prioritize opportunities that empower young members to pursue their goals with greater confidence and support.

This year’s scholarship recipients are Daniel Xie, Kai Griffith, and Brayden Goudge – all graduating from Houghton High School this spring. Applications were reviewed by an internal scholarship committee and evaluated using a structured, point-based scoring system to ensure a fair and consistent selection process. Students were required to write an essay about their financial goals and provide two reference letters, one from a community member and one from an employee at their school.

Community Donation

During its annual meeting, Breakwater also donated $2,500 to the Copper Shores Bridges Program, an initiative focused on building financial stability and opportunity for individuals and families across the Copper Country. The program works to empower community members by addressing the challenges faced by those living paycheck to paycheck and providing tools, education, and support to help them achieve long-term economic stability.

Gifts & Prizes

As part of the evening’s festivities, Breakwater also hosted a member raffle, awarding more than $3,000 in cash prizes to attendees. The giveaway added an extra layer of excitement to the event and served as a fun way to thank members for their continued support and participation in the credit union.

Extended Thank Yous

Special thanks to Bob Hiltunen for providing music throughout the event and helping create a welcoming atmosphere for all in attendance. Breakwater also extends its appreciation to its Board of Directors, Supervisory Committee, and dedicated management team and staff for their continued commitment and hard work. Thank you to all members and guests who joined us for the 72nd Annual Business Meeting & Dinner.
