BrightStar Credit Union breaks ground on new corporate headquarters

Leading Broward County Credit Union will become first corporate building to open in Cooper City

BrightStar Credit Union, one of the largest credit unions in South Florida, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony and press conference on June 23, 2021 for its new corporate headquarters, which will be located at 3400 North University Drive in Cooper City, Florida, making it the first corporate building to be built in Cooper City.

Cooper City Mayor Greg Ross, BrightStar Credit Union CEO and President Michael Tomko, VP of Marketing Dustin Jacobs and BrightStar Credit Union Chairperson of Board of Directors Dr. Colin Battle greeted attendees and opened the ceremony with their welcome speeches. Ryan Shrouder, Commissioner District 4, Cooper City; Howard Meltzer, Commissioner District 2, Cooper City; Bina Fink, on behalf of Mayor Steve Geller of Broward; and BrightStar’s board members and senior executives also joined the mayor, Mr. Tomko, and Dr. Colin Battle at the event. Beth Flansbaum-Talabisco presented BrightStar Credit Union with a proclamation which declared June 23rd as “Brightstar Credit Union Day” on behalf of District 3 Vice Mayor Michael Udine. All attendees gathered with hard hats and shovels to celebrate the occasion.

In an effort to support local charities and philanthropic partners dedicated to improving the city, BrightStar invited five local nonprofit organizations including Broward Education Foundation, Humane Society of Broward County, Cooper City Chamber of Commerce, Bit-By-Bit Medical Therapeutic Riding Center and Palm Beach Education Foundation, to participate in an exciting treasure hunt where each organization had the chance to discover a cash prize, a donation on behalf of BrightStar, ranging from $500 to $1,500.

“As one of the largest credit unions in the southeast, our company has enjoyed profitable growth for 75 years and what better way to continue to serve all Florida counties than by opening a new state-of-the-art facility in Cooper City where we can exceed the growing needs of our members,” said Michael Tomko, president and CEO of BrightStar Credit Union. “We are excited for this project and look forward to continuing to serve Broward County residents.”

Developed by Monterra Community Developers and designed by award-winning design firm DEI Corporation, the 70,316 sq.ft. office building will consolidate all company operations and nearly 200 employees in one location, in addition to adding a new branch with 250 parking spaces and several drive-thru teller lanes, bringing additional banking services and jobs to the community. The development’s youthful and energetic design will provide amenities to support a modern office lifestyle, including extensive windows for access to natural light, designated staff engagement/break areas, conference rooms, a cafeteria, outdoor seating, and more.
