Campuses, communities celebrate 50 years of University Credit Union

ORONO, ME (November 8, 2017) — Fifty years after its founding on the University of Maine campus, University Credit Union celebrated its semi-centennial anniversary on Friday, November 3 with festivities at its branches across the state. The celebration included food, live radio broadcasts, giveaways, and conversations about what UCU has meant to generations of University of Maine System students, alumni, employees, and their families.

Friday’s festivities marked the culmination of a yearlong campaign to commemorate the credit union’s 50th anniversary. In addition to launching a new website, UCU held member appreciation days over the course of the year with sweepstakes, giveaways, and more. The credit union also invited members to share their favorite memories as members of UCU, collecting the stories for others to read on its website,  www.ucu.maine.edu/50th-anniversary.

“We started our UCU membership when it was located at the basement of Coburn Hall. Our four children still have accounts with UCU even though they are out of state. It’s a connection they want to continue. UCU staff have always been helpful with our needs,” wrote a 34-year member of UCU from central Maine.

“I always loved getting birthday cards with a moose on them from the UCU on Union Street back when my Gram set up an account for me when I was very young. It always put a smile on my little face,” wrote another longtime UCU member from central Maine.

Today, UCU is one of Maine’s largest full-service financial institutions, serving 28,000 members from nine locations in southern, central, and northern Maine. Since opening its doors in 1967, UCU has remained true to its roots in education through investments in financial literacy programs and technologies, products and services that actively advance the financial well-being of members at every stage of life.

“Serving members for 50 years is a great accomplishment for any financial institution, but there’s something to be said for an institution that continues to faithfully serve its original field of membership,” said UCU President and CEO Matthew Walsh. “Through this journey, our goals continue to remain the same: keeping the best service in place for our members so that we can help them achieve their financial dreams. I think all of those who have been a part of UCU would be very proud of where we are today, the thoughtful path we’ve taken to get here, and what we look forward to next.”
