Cardtronics and Walgreens extend and expand ATM relationship
Citibank set to brand more than 1,000 ATMs in key markets including New York City and Chicago Walgreens locations
HOUSTON, TX (January 17, 2017) — Cardtronics (Nasdaq: CATM) today announced an extended and expanded long-term ATM services agreement with Walgreens, one of the nation’s largest drugstore chains.
Walgreens renews Cardtronics
Cardtronics currently owns and operates approximately 6,700 ATMs nationwide in Walgreens and Duane Reade drugstores. Since establishing the relationship with Walgreens in 2004, Cardtronics has grown its ATM presence in Walgreens drugstores from fewer than 400 ATMs initially to the current fleet size, which under the terms of the expanded agreement is scheduled to increase.
Cardtronics is the largest single provider of ATM services to the Walgreens family of drugstores, which includes Duane Reade pharmacies.
Citibank branded ATMs at Walgreens
Citi (NYSE: C), the leading global bank, has signed a new ATM branding agreement with Cardtronics that will result in broad market reach as well as surcharge-free ATM access for Citibank customers at approximately 1,000 Walgreens and Duane Reade drugstores in key markets, including the New York City and Chicago metropolitan areas.
Going forward, the Citibank-Cardtronics ATM branding relationship, established in 2007, will also cover an additional portfolio of more than 900 retail ATMs placed in other pharmacy, mass merchandiser, and wholesale club store locations in Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. Additionally, Citibank cardholders will also have surcharge-free ATM access, powered by the Allpoint Network, at more than 30,000 ATMs located at many of the same retailers.
Commencing immediately, Cardtronics will begin outfitting its ATMs with Citibank branding at the aforementioned retail locations, with project completion expected this spring. Citibank customers can always find the nearest participating surcharge-free ATMs using the Citi ATM/Branch locator, which receives location data updates as new locations are added.
“ATM service is an important convenience for our customers,” said Moe Alkemade, group vice president and general merchandise manager for Walgreens. “We are pleased these agreements mean that millions of payment card users will have surcharge-free access to ATMs in our stores. It’s another customer-focused service we’re happy to provide.”
“We are pleased to team up with Cardtronics to significantly expand fee-free ATM access for our customers at premier retailers nationwide,” said Will Howle, Head of U.S. Retail Banking at Citi. “By nearly doubling our network of surcharge-free ATMs, we’re making it even easier for Citibank customers to meet their banking needs on the go.”
“Cardtronics has served Walgreens and Citi independently for the past decade. Now we have the opportunity to bring these relationships together in a mutually beneficial way,” said Jonathan Simpson-Dent, Chief Commercial Officer, Cardtronics. “Cardtronics has become the ATM infrastructure partner for both organizations and their customers, who demand free and easy cash access now more than ever.”
