Celebrating Black History through art
Contest for Roanoke County and Roanoke City High School Students
ROANOKE, VA (January 24, 2019) — February, being Black History month, offers a time to celebrate and reflect on the African-American heritage, culture, and achievements. The United States Postal Service (USPS) is hosting a Black History Celebration event at William Fleming High School on Sunday, February 17, 2019. As a part of this event, Blue Eagle Credit Union is sponsoring a Black Migrations Art Contest for Roanoke City and Roanoke County High School students. The students are invited to express this year’s theme through artwork. Each year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) establishes a theme for Black History Month. This year, the ASALH has selected the theme of Black Migrations, which emphasizes the movement of people of African descent to new destinations and new social realities. From farms to cities, South to North, East to West, Caribbean to US, US to Europe, etc., these migrations influenced population, social environments, churches, music, industrial and entrepreneurial work, politics, and more!
Through drawing, painting, and photography, students can convey a story around the Black Migrations theme. Entries should be submitted to the student’s respective Roanoke City or Roanoke County High School for the first round of judging. Each high school will select their top two entries by Friday, February 8, 2019 to advance to the final round of competition. The final judging, decision and award presentation will take place at the USPS Black History Celebration event at William Fleming High School located at 3649 Ferncliff Ave in Roanoke, VA 24017 on Sunday, February 17, 2019. Attendees can look forward to musical selections from local groups and choirs, a dance presentation, Roanoke historical excerpts, and local vendors. The event starts with a reception in the cafeteria from 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm, and concludes in the auditorium from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
