Chesterfield, VA – May 25, 2011 – The Board of Directors for Chesterfield Federal Credit Union (CFCU) has approved all students attending Chesterfield County Public Schools as the latest eligible group for membership with the Credit Union. Membership is also opened for student’s family members.
CFCU has had a long partnership with Chesterfield County Public Schools. The Credit Union was founded by employees of the school system in 1963. Since then, CFCU has participated in many school-sponsored events, including From Crayons to Computers, the Bravo Awards and as an in-class guest speaker on many financial topics. Last year, CFCU made a financial contribution to each high school’s post-prom celebration.
“We are happy to offer Chesterfield students the same low-cost account products that their teachers have enjoyed for 48 years. Our commitment is to ensure the financial education of Chesterfield students, and membership at a member-owned credit union is just one step in the process,” said Jeanne Dotson, President/CEO of CFCU.
Membership is now available at any of CFCU’s three area locations.
About Chesterfield Federal Credit Union
Chesterfield Federal Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative founded 48 years ago by the administration of Chesterfield County and Chesterfield County Public Schools as a method of pooling their funds to reap the benefits of lower cost loans, higher dividend rates and lower fees. Since then, CFCU has expanded to include Amelia County, Amelia County Public Schools, Brandermill Community Association, Chesterfield County Public School Seniors and several Select Employment Groups.
Unlike other financial institutions, credit unions are owned and controlled by their members. There are no outside stockholders and no paid Board of Directors. All of the credit union’s excess earnings are returned to members in the form of lower interest rates on loans, higher dividend rates on deposits, lower fees and additional services. The all-volunteer Board of Directors is democratically elected by the membership, and each member is entitled to one vote regardless of the amount they have on deposit.
