Chuck Papenfus named California Credit Union League Chairman
ONTARIO, CA (November 17, 2015) — Chuck Papenfus—president and CEO of Inland Valley Federal Credit Union in Fontana, CA—was named board chairman of the California Credit Union League during its recent Annual Meeting and Convention held at the JW Marriott Desert Springs in Palm Desert, CA.
Rounding out the League board’s executive committee are vice chairman Hank Barrett, president and CEO of Valley First Credit Union in Modesto, CA and Nader Moghaddam, president and CEO Financial Partners Credit Union in Downey, CA. Past board chairman Jon Hernandez—president and CEO of CalCom Federal Credit Union, Mattel Federal Credit Union, and Nikkei Credit Union—is an ex-officio member.
On the top of his list of goals for his tenure as chairman, Papenfus would like to see continued high-quality efforts in advocacy for credit unions in all areas (legislative, regulatory and consumer). He’d also like to see further efficiency measures and collaboration with other trade associations to respect the allocation of member funds within the credit union system.
“I also want to work on efforts to unite credit unions so that we can collectively improve our market share and help more consumers than ever, and support all credit unions, whether large or small, to be the best choice for consumers,” he said.
Papenfus was introduced to credit unions early in life, working part-time while still in college. After graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in management science from the University of California at San Diego, he accepted a full-time position at Inland Valley Federal Credit Union. He was promoted to CEO in 1993.
He has served on numerous volunteer boards within and outside the credit union movement, including the Tri-County Chapter of the California Credit Union League (treasurer, vice president, regional learning center coordinator); Western Region Catalyst Council and then the National Catalyst Advisory Council; Mountain Shadows Homeowners Association (as president); and treasurer of several community and school non-profit organizations such as CREER in San Juan Capistrano, LIFT of Capistrano Unified School District, ALL in Saddleback Unified School District, and the Ducker School Board of Visitors.
Papenfus earned an MBA from Claremont Graduate University’s Drucker School of Business, where he brought credit union issues to the forefront spearheading several group analysis projects with his classmates. He is a 1990 Western CUNA Management School graduate.
He’s a member of the Southern California Credit Union Alliance’s steering committee, as he believes enhancing collaboration among credit unions to reduce the economies of scale disadvantages vs. larger financial institutions is paramount to long-term industry success. He has served on the California Credit Union League Board of Directors since 2010. He is also the board chairman of CU*Northwest, a 100-percent credit union-owned core processing solution.
