OSHKOSH, WI (July 23, 2014) -- Members of CitizensFirst’s Next Gen Outreach program volunteered at a drive for the Fond du Lac Humane Society, gathering donations of food and supplies from the Humane Society’s wish list. The donations help the Humane Society provide humane care and treatment to all animals needing protection.
Credit unions are an important part of the communities they serve, operating under the Seven Cooperative Principles. CitizensFirst Credit Union introduced Next Gen, a product of Chatter Yak!, to their membership and in addition to bringing financial education to the group of 15- to 25-year-olds, they are demonstrating two of the Cooperative Principles:
- Concern for Community
- Democratic Member Control (by empowering young people to collaborate and choose where to focus their volunteer efforts for maximum impact)
Seven Next Gen participants, along with a couple of CitizensFirst employees, spent nearly four hours at Festival Foods in Fond du Lac on Saturday, July 12 to encourage shoppers to make a purchase at the store and donate it to the Humane Society. They loaded up the cuBe (credit union Big experience) truck with hundreds of dollars in donations of cash and supplies that were dropped off at the Fond du Lac Humane Society the following Monday.
The CitizensFirst Next Gen group meets every other month. The first 30 minutes of the meeting are committed to financial education and the next 30 minutes are dedicated to planning an event for the following month, such as the donation drive for the Humane Society.
