CommonWealth One shreds over 30,000 pounds of paper at Community Shred Day
Semi-annual event helps community members protect themselves from identity theft
ALEXANDRIA, VA (April 26, 2016) — CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union members and residents from the Alexandria and Harrisonburg, Virginia communities shredded more than 30,000 lbs. of paper at the credit union’s free, semi-annual community Shred Day event on April 16.
Since 2009, CommonWealth One has hosted free, on-site, secure shredding events twice each year. “This spring, members and local residents in the Alexandria and Harrisonburg areas shredded more pounds of paper than ever before,” said Karyle Thornton, Chief Marketing Officer.
More than one in five American adults say they have been a victim of identity theft, according to a 2016 survey by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Shredding sensitive paperwork, including bills, old tax documents and other items with personally identifiable information can help prevent identity theft.
The Shred Day events were hosted at CommonWealth One’s Main Branch in Alexandria, VA, at 4875 Eisenhower Avenue and at the Harrisonburg Regional Branch in Harrisonburg, VA, at 42 Terri Drive. HR Contractors in Harrisonburg and Safeguard Shredding in Alexandria provided shredding trucks for the events.
CommonWealth One staff members were at both locations to personally assist members and the public with disposing of their materials. Branch Managers and staff were also available to answer questions about mortgage and home equity loans, auto loans, checking and savings accounts, online account opening, and e- Services, including Mobile Apps and Text Banking as well as other financial products and services.
This Shred event was free and open to the public. CommonWealth One’s next Shred Day is September 17, 2016, at the same two locations.
